Top Tips

Research is key. Will what you are writing appeal to people? It's a business, a retail business - and your book has to sell and appeal to more people than your immediate family and friends. Be advised by the editors you contact, and take all criticism as constructive. If your mum loves your book, but the 50 publishers you sent it to say otherwise - be open to the fact that possibly you need to work on it some more. Why not post the first chapter and a synopsis on one of these new-fangled blog type websites and see what feedback you get. Also, enter every writing competition you can, online and in magazines. Check out the books section on the BBC website for starters. The more experience you get of writing the better. Finally, there is a misguided belief that everyone has a book in them. Be warned - you may have a book in you, but before you put pen to paper or finger to keyboard think carefully. Would anyone other than you want to read it? Sara-Jade Piper - Book-buyer
